| Shitamachi Gaijin
is a book of essays, in Japanese, and paintings. There are essays about ink painting . Also about Shitamachi life - Shitamachi most often mistranslated as "Downtown." Shitamachi lifestyle has almost vanished and is much romaticised these days in the media. It comes from people in the lowlands, the poorer part of town. It is a culture born of trying to survive squeezed up against your neighbors in tiny tenement houses. There are also some essays about life in a gaijin house. Gaijin being the rough Japanese word for foriener. The gaijin house was a comunity of low budget travelers, forieners that would heve been aliens where ever in the world you put them. They seemed particularly happy to be aliens in Japan. 1300 yen at a bookstore near you |
