sumi ink and color on bamboo paper, 2006 |
Exhibition 2006
September 23 - October 22 KonTon Jin (Chaos) Jim Hathaway New Ink Paintings associated with Art Link, http://artlink.jp.org/ and Geikoten, http://www.geikoten.net/links/
4 - 1 - 16 Yanaka, Taito-Ku, Tokyo
For 16 years I have chased Japanese ink - Fresh black ink on soft washi paper - clean, and pure. Sumi ink called me. It pulled me along. Every day it taught me something new. There are no materials more direct or more sensitive than fresh ground ink on hand made paper, connected by the soft natural hairs of a well made brush. It creates a direct transmission form heart to hand to the soul of the paper. This year I changed. Ink is still the base, but not in the clean way of a suiboku painter. My lines are for scratching, cutting - for defining space. Over the lines I pour color. I flood the paper with it, until it battles, bleeds and flows. Color is emotion. It is all I have. My title, konton jin, chaos human. Anyone who has ever had a family understands chaos - “A wife, children, the whole catastrophe.”

人間の最大な長所は失敗をする能力があること。 カオスー混沌の中の私。 にじみが作る混ぜ色の妙。間違った線がつくる正しい線。 間違いをすることも能力。それは人間の最大な長所だ、と思う。
