People Places and Sumi Ink, Space Ograya, Yanaka, Tokyo, October 1994.  I discovered Japanese classical sumi ink on washi paper the way Columbus discovered America.  Of course it was already there when I arrived.  And I was not the first to find it.  But it was new to me.  It was fresh and alive with possibilities.  This was my second exhibition of ink painting in Japan and it was so very much fun to paint my neighborhood and my neighbors with the new materials I had discovered.
